BCF believes that members play an active role in education and raising awareness of breast cancer. Both men and women are encouraged to become members.

Introduction

Through its Awareness & Education Programme, BCF reaches out to as many people as possible irrespective of gender, profession or ethnic group. BCF believes that by doing so more people will not only become aware of breast cancer and related issues but also become our partners in spreading our education messages. Strategies include face-to-face programmes, fund-raising activities as well as messages and information through mass media.

Activities include:

  • A month-long Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign in October. Activities include the "Wear the Pink Ribbon" and other breast cancer awareness events.
  • Talks and exhibitions at community clubs, associations, schools, tertiary institutions, hospitals, private corporations and government organisations. Topics usually included are an overview of breast cancer, the importance of early detection, how to conduct breast self examination and a survivor sharing her experience
  • Print materials for distribution
  • This website where information on breast cancer is provided
  • Public seminars, symposiums and exhibitions
  • Media projects. These have included advertisements on radio and TV Mobile, bus stop posters, taxi top messages etc, usually done with the help of sponsors
  • Ad hoc activities whenever opportunities arise

When and where appropriate, BCF works closely with the media to reach out to the masses by providing media representatives with information on breast cancer and programmes and services that are available to people affected by the disease as well as facilitating interviews with survivors.
